Wiegel: The vision solution specialist for vehicles and machines

Back to overview

At Stoneridge, we understand how important visibility is for safety and efficiency in transport and industry. With our Orlaco brand, we supply vision solutions that are suitable for every situation. To achieve this, we work with reliable partners such as Wiegel, a specialist in vision solutions for a wide variety of vehicles and machines. Wiegel helps customers choose the right camera and monitor systems, so drivers and operators have an optimum view of their environment.

In this customer case, we talk to Paul from Wiegel Transport Equipment and take you on a journey into the collaboration between Wiegel and Stoneridge to show you what benefits it offers end users.

An introduction: What does Wiegel Transport Equipment do?

"With our knowledge and experience, we help our customers provide the correct vision solutions to end users of vehicles and machines. In many cases, we provide a tailor-made solution. Our customers are often intermediaries who supply the vehicles to the end user. You could see us as a supplier of advanced vision solutions. We specialize in providing solutions for most types of vehicles, with a particular emphasis on trucks and trailers, heavy machinery and forklifts. Since 2001, we have been working with Stoneridge to achieve these Orlaco solutions."

How did this cooperation come about?

"We started out as a 'competitor' of Orlaco and regularly encountered them when there were requests and tenders. At that time, the company was growing rapidly and was looking for dealers to collaborate with. In 2001, we began operating as an Orlaco dealer, serving a specific market at that time. Over the years, our collaboration has grown and we have evolved into a partner that now serves multiple markets and provides a wide range of vision solutions."

What is the added value of Wiegel?

"We distinguish ourselves through a combination of technical expertise, fast service and a customer-oriented approach. This means:

  • Extensive knowledge and experience, including specialist and technical know-how.
  • Always a matched stock so customers receive what they need at the desired time.
  • Honest advice: If a solution does not fit, we will adjust it and work together to find the right solution.
  • On-site demonstrationswhere customers can test the systems immediately. This sometimes provides insights that had not been anticipated in advance, enabling customized solutions.
  • Specialist team: Our workshop technicians install a lot of camera systems, and we also have on-site service technicians for installations.
  • Fast deliveries: A system can be delivered and installed within a week because we offer expedited installations. The standard is that the installation can be completed within two to three weeks.

We don't just provide vision solutions, but a comprehensive service that ensures our clients' systems operate seamlessly and meet their exact requirements."

A reliable system to make the difference

"Orlaco's vision solutions enable us to meet virtually all of our customers' needs. For us, that means not only delivering the right image, but also delivering a reliable and high-quality product A camera system must never be the reason why a vehicle comes to a standstill. Orlaco makes the difference for us."

“The quality of Orlaco's systems is so high that faults, breakdowns and warranty claims are minimal. Our customers experience this themselves and therefore often return to an Orlaco solution via us. Moreover, customers grow accustomed to our systems and become familiar with our service, meaning that they know exactly what they can expect from us."

What else makes Orlaco systems unique?

"With Orlaco Vision Systems, Stoneridge offers a wide range of camera aperture angles and other types of cameras. This will allow us to satisfy in a large proportion of all the demand on the market. One good example is a customer with a trailer who had very little room to maneuver on a farmyard, just past a cowshed. He not only needed a view behind him, but also wanted a good view of the left and right sides."

"We also get requests relating to convoi exceptionnel, that is to say abnormal or oversize loads. These already move with a transport escort, but it is also very convenient for the driver to be able to see around their load. This load is often too large to fit within the standard mirrors, but can be accommodated with an additional camera. Camera systems from Orlaco provide these drivers with extra visibility where it is needed."

What challenges do Orlaco systems solve?

"The perfect metaphor for the vision solutions we both provide is looking around a corner. For example, take a truck driver who has to remove a pallet at a height of more than six meters from a warehouse racking. When you're that high up, everything becomes small. Now, there are even fifteen-meter-high warehouses. At these heights, you must be able to trust that your forks are positioned exactly within the pallet. We have cameras that look along the fork so that you can see exactly where you are inserting the fork. This gives confidence to the driver, it's ergonomic because they doesn't have to look up all the time and it's also safer because it prevents dropping. These are some of the benefits a camera system offers."

A camera system for every situation

"Another good example of the impact of camera systems is increased safety for asphalt pavers. Thanks to cameras, the paver has become so safe that it can be operated with one person fewer. This provides a solution for markets where staffing is short."

We have talked a lot about what can be achieved with camera systems. Are there systems that are very popular?

“In the forklift market, it has to be the View-on-Forks system that a cable running through the mast. The cable through the mast is needed so that you do not experience any delay in seeing the image. We often hear back from clients that this works very well, because the images are really immediately visible."

"In the case of trucks, we see that the CornerEye camera is increasingly replacing the sidewalk mirror and front view mirror. This increases the view of the right-hand corner of the vehicle, where statistically most accidents occur. CornerEye really makes things much safer. If this system is correctly installed, you will have the option to remove the sidewalk mirror."

What do you think the future holds for camera systems?

"Vision solutions are increasingly accepted and we see the number of potential applications increasing. We have noticed that companies that have worked with a camera-based monitoring system no longer want to go without it. We are slowly seeing more and more machines and vehicles equipped with a camera."

"Continuing to innovate and listening to market needs are very important for this. Together with Stoneridge, Wiegel looks at the needs of the market and at where camera-based monitoring systems are needed. The technology continues to develop and camera systems, which are already so important, will become even more important in the future."
